How to Choose a Paint Protection Film Installer in Jackson Hole

Paint protection film is only as good as the person applying it. The film itself is a commodity you can buy anywhere; the installation is the craft you're actually paying for. Before you hand over your keys — or a deposit — ask every shop these five questions and compare the answers.

1. Which film brand do you install?

There is a real difference between premium films (XPEL, SunTek, LLumar) and the unbranded rolls some shops use to hit a low price. Ask for the specific product line — not just the brand. "XPEL Ultimate Plus," for example, is a self-healing 8-mil film with a published warranty; "XPEL" alone could mean a cheaper matte or entry product. We install XPEL Ultimate Plus.

2. How long is the warranty — and what does it cover?

A quality film carries a manufacturer warranty of roughly 10 years against yellowing, cracking, bubbling, and peeling. Ask whether the warranty is on the film (manufacturer-backed) or just the labor (shop-backed). Both matter, but a labor-only warranty from a shop that closes next winter is worth very little.

3. Who actually honors the warranty?

This is the question most people forget. If the shop disappears, does the film manufacturer still stand behind the product? With an authorized dealer, the answer is yes — the manufacturer honors the film warranty directly, independent of the installing shop. That's a large part of why authorized-dealer status is worth paying for.

4. Where is the film installed?

PPF must be installed in a clean, climate-controlled space. Any dust, pollen, or debris in the air can land on the paint mid-install and get sealed under the film permanently. Ask to see the bay. In Jackson, temperature control also matters — adhesive won't cure correctly in an unheated shop in January. Our installs happen in a temperature- and dust-controlled bay, and vehicles cure indoors before release.

5. Computer-cut or hand-cut?

Computer-cut (plotter-cut) patterns are pre-programmed to your exact year, make, and model — precise, repeatable, and with clean edges. Hand-cutting on the vehicle can wrap edges more seamlessly but risks blade marks in your clear coat if done by an inexperienced installer. Neither is wrong, but you should know which you're getting. We use XPEL DAP software for computer-cut precision, wrapping edges by hand only where it improves the finish.

The three names you'll hear most in the premium PPF market are XPEL, SunTek, and LLumar. All three make genuinely good film. The differences are in the specific product lines and the warranty terms attached to them.

• XPEL Ultimate Plus — an 8-mil self-healing film with a hydrophobic top coat, backed by a 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking, and peeling. XPEL also runs the most complete DAP pattern library, which matters for clean computer-cut coverage. This is what we install.
• SunTek Ultra — a self-healing film with a strong warranty and excellent optical clarity, well regarded in the industry. Its pattern library and dealer network are somewhat smaller than XPEL's.
• LLumar Platinum — from the same parent company as SunTek (Eastman), a durable self-healing film with a comparable warranty, often found at shops tied to the window-tint side of the business.

Our honest take: the film brand matters far less than the installer. A properly installed SunTek or LLumar front end will outperform a rushed XPEL install every time. Focus your comparison on the shop, then confirm they're using a current-generation self-healing product with a real warranty. Any shop can print "XPEL installer" on a banner. Authorized-dealer status is different — it means the manufacturer has vetted and certified the shop, supplies film directly, and honors the film warranty on installs that shop performs. Here's how to confirm it independently, before you book.

• Use the manufacturer's installer locator. XPEL publishes an official installer locator on its own website. Search your city and confirm the shop is actually listed. If a shop claims authorization but doesn't appear in the manufacturer's own directory, ask why.
• Ask for the warranty registration process. Authorized installs are registered with the manufacturer so the warranty travels with the vehicle. If a shop can't explain how your warranty gets recorded, that's a flag.
• Confirm they buy film directly. Authorized dealers purchase fresh, properly stored rolls from the manufacturer — not third-party resellers. Old or heat-damaged film is harder to install cleanly and more likely to fail early.

You'll find PPF offered by two kinds of businesses in a mountain town: vinyl wrap shops that also do PPF, and detail/protection shops where PPF is a core service. Both can install excellent film. The distinction is one of specialty, not quality.

Vinyl wrap shops live and breathe color-change wraps, commercial graphics, and vinyl. Their installers are extremely comfortable manipulating film around complex curves, and a good one does beautiful PPF work. The thing to confirm is that PPF is a regular part of their business — not an occasional add-on — because clear urethane film behaves differently from opaque vinyl.

Dedicated PPF and protection shops — like ours — treat paint protection as the main event. That usually means a climate-controlled install bay, DAP pattern software, and installers who cut and wrap clear film every week. It also means PPF sits alongside paint correction and ceramic coating, so the same shop can correct your paint first and coat over the film after, in one coordinated visit.

The right choice is the shop that installs your film brand regularly, works in a controlled environment, and carries authorized-dealer status. Ask to see recent work on a vehicle like yours, and trust your eyes on the edges and corners — that's where installation skill shows.

Jackson Hole is unusually hard on paint, and understanding why makes the case for a properly installed front end.

Gravel and rock chips. Teton Pass switchbacks, Highway 22, and the valley's gravel and construction zones throw a constant stream of stone at your front end. Sand, cinder, and loose gravel pit the leading edge of the hood, the fenders, the bumper, and the mirror caps. Bare paint chips; every chip is a spot where moisture and salt can start working under the clear coat. PPF absorbs those impacts as a sacrificial layer so your factory paint stays intact.

Winter magnesium chloride. From November through April, Teton County treats roads with magnesium chloride brine. It's effective at melting ice and brutal on vehicles — it clings to lower panels, works into chips, and accelerates corrosion. Mag chloride is exactly why a chipped front end deteriorates fast here: the road chemistry finds every break in the paint. Film keeps the surface sealed, and pairing it with a ceramic coating makes the whole vehicle easier to rinse clean through salt season.

Our practical recommendation for most Jackson Hole vehicles: PPF on the high-impact front end, ceramic coating over the rest.
