Here is the thing worth knowing before you start comparing quotes in this valley: Jackson Hole Mobile Detailing is a mobile only operation, and so are most of the detailers you will find searching from Jackson. That is a structural fact about how the business is built, not a criticism of it.

A mobile detailer publishes a service area rather than a shop address, because there is no shop to publish. Mobile is the right call for a real set of jobs, and we will say so on the phone. If what you need is a maintenance wash, a vacuum and an interior wipe down, and the vehicle sits at a house or an office where it can comfortably be worked on, a mobile detailer solves that neatly and you keep your afternoon. Four things the building gives us on every protective job.

A climate controlled bay for coating cure

Ceramic coatings cure by chemical reaction, and every serious manufacturer publishes an application window for temperature and relative humidity. Our application bay is climate controlled, so we set the room to that published window and hold it there for as long as the product needs. A coating booked for a January morning gets the same conditions as one booked in July, and the vehicle stays inside for the full cure before it meets weather. That is why coating is a year round service at 1655 Martin Lane rather than a seasonal one, and why fall is a genuinely good time to book: the protection goes on right before the roads get treated.

Correction lighting that does not move

Swirl marks and holograms only appear to the eye at certain angles. Paint correction is therefore limited less by the polisher than by whether the technician can see the defect consistently while working on it. Our correction lighting is fixed and positioned, so a panel reads the same at 8 AM as it does at 4 PM. A defect that looks gone is gone, rather than temporarily out of view, and that is what lets us sign off a correction honestly and quote a one step and a two step as genuinely different pieces of work.

Filtered air and controlled dust

Paint protection film is installed wet and squeegeed down onto the panel, and a fresh coating stays receptive for hours after it goes on. Anything airborne that lands in that window ends up under the finish permanently rather than on top of it, where it could be washed off. An enclosed room is something you can keep still and filtered: no June cottonwood fluff, no gravel dust, no pollen. Dust control is a property of a space, which is the plainest reason our film and coating work happens indoors and stays indoors to cure.

Power, water, heat and a drain

Hot water at pressure, a carpet extractor, a steamer, a lift and a floor drain all live in the building permanently, plugged in and plumbed. Nothing has to be hauled, generated or rationed. In practice that is what makes a proper winter undercarriage decontamination possible: hot water into wheel wells and seams for as long as the job actually takes, with the runoff going into a drain. It is the least glamorous advantage a shop has and probably the one that changes the most jobs.

This part is the same wherever you take the car, so it is worth understanding before you hire anyone.

Decontamination comes first

Washing removes what is loose. Decontamination removes what is bonded: industrial fallout and rail dust, embedded brake dust, tree sap, and the fine grit you can feel through a plastic bag when you run a hand over the paint. It is a chemical step, iron and tar removers dissolving what has bonded to the clear coat, followed by a mechanical one, a clay bar or clay medium drawing out the rest. Skip it and every later step drags contamination across the paint. Every correction and coating package we run includes decontamination and a clay bar treatment for that reason. The International Detailing Association runs the skills certification program for this trade, and its published syllabus is a reasonable place to look if you want to know what a professional detailer is expected to be able to do.

Correction is measured in stages, not in effort

Paint correction means machine polishing the clear coat to level defects out of it, and it is counted in stages. A one step, sometimes called an enhancement polish, uses a single pad and polish combination to knock back light swirling and restore gloss. We quote ours at roughly a 50% improvement, because that is honestly what one pass achieves on most paint. A two step adds a cutting compound before the finishing polish, removing deeper defects and then refining the haze the cutting stage leaves behind. We quote ours at roughly 75%. Neither figure is modesty for its own sake. Clear coat is finite, and anyone promising 100% is promising to remove more of it than is wise.

Panel prep is where the money in a coating quote actually goes

A ceramic coating is optically honest. It locks in the condition of the paint underneath it, so swirls present at application stay under the coating, and removing them afterwards means removing the coating first. This is why two quotes for the same car and the same product can differ a lot and both be fair. The variable is not the bottle. It is how many hours of correction happen before the bottle is opened, plus the panel wipe down that strips polishing oils so the coating bonds to bare clear coat rather than to residue. Wherever you are getting quoted, ask how many stages of correction are included and what happens if the paint turns out to need more. Our Grand Detail includes a machine polish with a 1 year coating; our Premier Detail includes full two step correction with a 3 year coating.

Cure environment and cure time

Coating chemistry cross links: silica based polymers bonding into a continuous hard layer on the clear coat. Because that is a reaction rather than a drying, it is governed by temperature and humidity, and it carries on well past the point where the surface feels dry to the touch. Manufacturers publish an application window and a cure schedule for each product, and the systems we are authorized to install, Double Black and Ceramic Coating Inc., are no exception. Our Premier Detail runs about 48 hours in the building from arrival to cured, which is the time the process asks for rather than a scheduling convenience. Once it is on, washing a coated car correctly is what keeps it working.

What a film install needs

Film is a different discipline again. XPEL Ultimate Plus goes on wet, is positioned, squeegeed and heat set, and its adhesive keeps setting for days afterwards, so it wants a still, clean, temperature stable space during the install and immediately after. It also wants an installer the manufacturer has trained and authorized, which is a checkable fact rather than an adjective: XPEL publishes an installer locator so any customer can confirm a shop's authorization independently.
